Introduction:-

Carbon steel is an alloy with carbon and iron that consists of carbon content up to 2.1% by weight. The increase in the carbon percentage raises steel’s hardness and tenacity but makes it less ductile. Carbon steel is also less expensive than other steels due to the lack of other elements present in the alloy. The production cost of Carbon Steel Seamless Tubes is more because the process is a complicated and longer one in comparison to a welded type.

However, price is not the only factor that distinguishes them. For instance, a welded pipe has a longitudinal seam that is absent in a Carbon Steel Seamless Pipe. The presence of a seam could be cumbersome on many accounts. For example, in the presence of high pressure, there could be chances of a welded seam failing and if not properly welded, it could get corroded on the seam area.

In such cases, renowned Carbon Steel Pipe manufacturer in India, Dinesh Tube India recommends using a seamless pipe. Not only are they strong and hard but they are also capable of tolerating a pressure of more than 20% compared to their welded counterparts. Furthermore, welded pipes have better resistance to intergranular corrosion due to the void of a seam on their body.

Why is Black Steel used in Carbon Steel Seamless Tube?

Generally, black steel is used in the manufacture of a seamless Carbon Steel Black Pipe, non galvanized steel is referred to as black steel. The scaly, dark-colored ferrous oxide coating film on the surface of these pipes gives them the capacity of being resistant to corrosion as opposed to regular carbon steel. Hence the requirement for galvanization is discarded.

Deoxidized Carbon Steel Seamless Tube:-

Carbon steel that is fully killed has no free oxygen in its alloy. Deoxidized or fully killed steel is formed without oxygen, though an agent before being cast is added. Therefore, the scarcity of oxygen does not promote the evolution of gas during solidification of the alloy which means that the Fully Killed Carbon Steel line pipe not only inherits an unusual degree of chemical homogeneity but is also liberated from gas porosities.

Formation of Carbon Steel Seamless Tubes:-

The seamless carbon steel tube is created by perforating a steel ingot or a solid tube blank, and then hot rolled, cold rolled or cold drew. The raw material of the seamless carbon steel pipe is a round tube blank, which is dissected into a blank having a length of about 1 m by a cutting machine, and sent to a furnace for heating through a conveyor belt. The billet is fed into a furnace and heated to a temperature of approximately 1200 degrees celsius. The fuel that is used is hydrogen or acetylene but furnace temperature control remains a critical issue. After the round tube blank is released, it is made to go through a hole punching machine. The most common perforating machine is a conical roller punching machine. This perforating machine has high production efficiency, good product quality, a large diameter of perforation, and can wear a myriad of steel types. After perforation, the round billet is progressively rolled or extruded by three rolls. After extrusion, the tube should be sized empirically. The sizing machine is rotated at a high speed by a conical drill bit into a steel core to produce a steel pipe.

The inner diameter of the steel pipe is determined by the outer diameter of the sizing machine drill bit. After the steel pipe has been sized, it enters the cooling tower and is cooled by water spray. After the steel pipe is cooled, it is straightened. After the steel pipe is straightened, it is sent to a metal flaw detector (or water pressure test) by a conveyor belt for internal flaw detection. If there are cracks inside the steel pipe, bubbles and other problems will be detected. After the quality inspection of the steel pipe, it must be carefully selected by hand. After the quality inspection of the steel pipe, the paint is sprayed with the number, specification, production batch number, etc. It is hoisted into the warehouse by a crane.

Carbon Steel Seamless Grades:-

These grades are determined on the basis of the dimension of the tube.

  • ASTM A106 Grade B for high temperature services with dimensions ranging from 10.3~1200 x 1.0~150 in mm, whereas ASTM A106 Grade C is used for flanging and bending.
  • ASTM A53 Grade B is suitable for welding and for forming operations involving coiling, bending, and flanging; it has the dimensions of 0.3~1200 x 1.0~150 in mm.
  • ASTM A333 Grade 1, ASTM A333 Grade 3, ASTM A333 Grade 6 are used for Mechanical Tubing, having the dimensions of 1/4″~42″ x SCH20~XXS in mm.
  • Carbon Steel ASTM A334 Gr. 1 Seamless Tubes, ASTM A334 Grade 6 are involved in low temperature activities in petrochemical, marine, food-processing, oil and gas industries, they have the measurement of 1/4″~4″ x SCH20~SCH80 in mm.
  • ASTM A178 Carbon Steel Welded Tubes and ASTM A179 Carbon Steel Seamless Tubes are used as Low-Carbon Steel Heat-Exchanger and Condenser Tubes and are sized at 10.3~426 x 1.0~36 in mm.
  • ASTM A192 Carbon Steel Seamless Tube are used as high pressure boiler tubes and have the dimensions of 10.3~426 x 1.0~36 in mm.
  • Carbon Steel ASTM A210 Gr. 1 Seamless Tubes and ASTM A213 are Medium-carbon Steel Boiler and Superheater Tubes and are measured for 10.3~426 x 1.0~36 in mm.
  • ASTM A214 Carbon Steel Welded Tubes are used as Heat Exchangers, Condensers, And Similar Heat-Transfer Apparatus
